Aitkenhead Farm

Uddingston, SCOTLAND. Aitkenhead Battery Storage Located to the north of Uddingston and southeast of Bargeddie, approximately 12 km to the east of Glasgow city centre.

This project covers 30 acres and will link to the Clyde’s Mill substation in Cambuslang, capable of storing over 1 gigawatt-hours of low-carbon energy, with an operational lifespan of 40 years. The cable route will be determined and installed by Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN) and does not form part of our application.

Construction is expected to take around 12 months. Local highway restrictions will be followed, and a construction traffic management plan will be agreed with the local highway authority and Transport Scotland to ensure plans are appropriate.

Location Why this location? HARVESTING ENERGY IN BALANCE WITH NATURE. Tackling climate change requires urgent action, and Scotland must support the growth of new sectors. Transitioning to low-cost, low-carbon electricity from renewable sources is vital to Scotland’s climate strategy and must be achieved quickly.

This site has been selected after a detailed feasibility process, considering several key factors, including: grid capacity, topography, land availability, residential amenity, environmental designations, heritage assets, ecology & biodiversity, flood risk, agricultural land quality and landscape character.

We understand that fire safety is a critical concern for communities near Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). We want to reassure you that we are fully committed to implementing the highest safety standards to protect the community, environment, and our personnel.

A robust, safety-first approach is taken to all BESS design at BOOM Power. We apply the most up-to-date regulations and guidance on BESS safety and supplement this with the support of leading technology suppliers, under the supervision of independent industry experts and in liaison with local fire services.

Design Key Design Aspects The BESS will store excess energy during low demand and release it during peak demand, replacing fossil fuel-powered plants with a cleaner solution. We prioritise fire safety, working with experts and fire services to ensure comprehensive protection.

The visual impact of the BESS will be minimised through careful siting, preserving public rights of way, trees and hedgerows, with additional screening to maintain the rural aesthetic. Over time, the site will become a wildlife haven, designed by a landscape architect to integrate seamlessly with the countryside.
Did you know? The complete battery system is highly advanced, using cutting-edge technology. However, when broken down, the individual lithium-ion battery cells are surprisingly similar to those found in common products like battery drills, battery-powered vacuums, and even electric cars. The key difference is that, in the system, thousands of these cells are grouped and carefully managed together. The batteries are housed in a container, and there will also be associated electrical infrastructure on-site to support the safe and secure operation of the batteries.
Objective Supporting Local and National Climate Goals with Sustainable Development Empowering your future North Lanarkshire Council declared a climate emergency in June 2019 and committed to achieving net-zero for North Lanarkshire by 2030. Battery storage projects will support the recognised need for a transition away from fossil fuels. On a national level, the Scottish Government is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2045 through a Just Transition which aims to create a better future for everyone.

As a temporary, reversible development, the site will be restored to its original condition after 40 years, retaining its greenfield status and preventing alternative development without a new planning application.

BOOM Power recognises the importance of ensuring that the local community benefits from this development. To that end, we are proposing a community benefit fund as part of this project. The fund will support a range of local initiatives aligned with objectives related to energy, climate change, the environment, ecology, and sustainability.

In addition to the community benefit fund, the project will create local employment opportunities during construction and ongoing maintenance. Once operational, it will also generate millions of pounds in local business rates, contributing to the funding of local services.

We are committed to sustainability and work with licensed specialists to recycle all components of the solar farm. Through this project, we’re providing clean energy while enhancing local biodiversity, protecting habitats, and promoting long-term environmental health. We’re proud to contribute to the solution for the climate crisis and a more sustainable future for the UK.
Efficiency Additional planting will significantly boost biodiversity, creating a richer, more diverse ecosystem that supports a wide range of wildlife. Contact Fueling Tomorrow with BOOM Power. Contact Return
